  1. Bite on gauze for 2 hours, non-stop, changing gauze pads every 30-45 minutes.  The gauze is there to hold pressure - not absorb the blood.  Most of the liquid in the gauze will be saliva.
  2. Keep ice pack on the side of face for 30 minutes, off 10 minutes, for minimum of 3 hours to help reduce swelling.
  3. If you have excessive bleeding when you get home, wet a tea bag and bite on it until bleeding stops.
  4. Keep your head elevated higher than your heart for 24 hours.  Ex: Recliner or propped up on pillows.  Do not lie flat.
  5. No rinsing, spitting, smoking, or drinking through straws for 24 hours.
  6. No carbonated beverages for 24 hours.
  7. Soft food/liquid diet for first 12-24 hours.  Ex: lukewarm soup, jell-o, ice cream, yogurt, etc.
  8. Rinse with lukewarm salt water after 24 hours (Do not rinse with over-the-counter mouthwash!).  This helps cleanse and soothe the area.
  9. When brushing your teeth be careful not to abrade the surgical site.  Brushing will help your mouth feel fresh and clean.
